Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool

An interactive tool to measure a woman’s risk of invasive breast cancer.
Scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) Biostatistics Canter have developed this Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool, a Web tool that allows a health professional to project a woman’s individualized estimate of risk for invasive breast cancer over a 5-year period and over her lifetime (to age 90).

Guidelines related to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases:
  1. Revised Guidelines for HIV Counseling, Testing, and Referral.Uses an evidence-based approach for recommendations. Provides explanations and examples of recommended practices, including risk screening to target interventions in some settings and effective HIV-prevention counseling models.
  2. Revised Recommendations for HIV Screening of Pregnant Women. Recommends routine voluntary HIV testing as part of prenatal care. Offers ways to make the pretest screening process simpler and easier.
  3. Sexually Transmitted Disease Treatment Guidelines 2002. Presents a revised approach to diagnosing pelvic inflammatory disease. Offers alternative treatment regimens for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and bacterial vaginosis; an expanded section on newly available type-specific genital herpes serologic test; and a revised approach to the management of sexual assault victims.

Filmed on location at laboratories and clinics at the University of Washington, the video presents remarkable through-the-microscope footage of trichomonads, yeast, and clue cells associated with BV, allowing the viewer to quickly learn essential differentiation skills. Examination of Vaginal Wet Preps is designed for use both as an introductory teaching tool and as a library resource for refreshing skills. The straight-forward approach, clear visuals, and comprehensive coverage of determining the presence of infection make it an essential resource for all STD labs. Folic Acid Provider Tip Sheet

CDC has folic acid education materials available free of charge. The materials have been developed, tested, refined, and produced for two target audiences - the pregnancy contemplators and the pregnancy non-contemplators. The Contemplators group includes women who are planning a pregnancy or thinking about becoming pregnant sometime soon. The Before You Know It series of materials is geared toward this group. The pregnancy non-contemplators are not thinking about babies and are not planning a pregnancy anytime soon. The Ready, Not materials are intended for this group. Focus groups were conducted with women in the defined target audiences to explore their beliefs about what makes an effective folic acid prevention message, and their materials were developed accordingly.

The American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology's (ASCCP) has introduced a new series of online CME programs. The program was designed by ASCCP, in collaboration with the American Social Health Association, to address the most pressing gynecologic issues facing physicians and other licensed healthcare providers today. Each lecture features a PowerPoint lecture containing cytologic, colposcopic, and histologic images, as well as scrolling text and audio accompaniments. Each lecture takes approximately 60 minutes to complete, however, participants may proceed through the lectures at their own pace, with the program allowing the user to bookmark a lecture and return at a later time. Upon completion of a short CME exam and evaluation survey, the participant will then receive 1 continuing medical education credit (Category 1) for each lecture. Participation in the ASCCP Online CME Program and receipt of CME credit is free.

These guidelines for the treatment of persons who have sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were developed by CDC after consultation with a group of professionals knowledgeable in the field of STDs who met in Atlanta, Georgia, during April 19–21, 2005. The information in this report updates the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines, 2002 (MMWR 2002;51[No. RR-6]). Included in these updated guidelines are an expanded diagnostic evaluation for cervicitis and trichomoniasis; new antimicrobial recommendations for trichomoniasis; additional data on the clinical efficacy of azithromycin for chlamydial infections in pregnancy; discussion of the role of Mycoplasma genitalium and trichomoniasis in urethritis/cervicitis and treatment-related implications; emergence of lymphogranuloma venereum protocolitis among men who have sex with men (MSM); expanded discussion of the criteria for spinal fluid examination to evaluate for neurosyphilis; the emergence of azithromycinresistant Treponema pallidum; increasing prevalence of quinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in MSM; revised discussion concerning the sexual transmission of hepatitis C; postexposure prophylaxis after sexual assault; and an expanded discussion of STD prevention approaches.
