CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING 2008 is a new video update series consisting of a brief introduction followed by three separate 40-minute lectures:
- The 2006 Consensus Guidelines for the Management of Abnormal Cytology
- Adolescent Cytology: A Special Population
- HPV: The Virus and the Vaccine
This self-study learning activity is provided on a single DVD containing chaptered video presentations and printable program handouts. It is appropriate for individual or group use, to update experienced clinicians as well as to orient new staff. Continuing education credit is available in the form of nursing contact hours.
Featured Speaker: Alan Waxman, MD, MPH
Dr. Waxman is a Professor in the Department of OB/GYN at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. He was an active participant in the 2006 ASCCP Consensus Conference and principle author of ACOG Practice Bulletin Number 45 on cervical cancer screening.
THE GOAL of this program is to enable health care professionals to implement and explain to clients recent changes in guidelines regarding cervical cancer screening, HPV DNA testing, and the HPV vaccine.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this activity participants should be able to:
- List new recommendations on the management of women with ASC, AGC, and SIL derived from the 2006 ASCCP Consensus Conference
- Discuss evidence that justifies these changes
- Discuss the use of cytology plus HPV DNA testing in cervical screening
- Discuss the acquisition of HPV
- Discuss HPV biology in adolescents
- Discuss screening and management strategies for adolescents with abnormal cytology
- Review the pathophysiology of HPV as an agent of disease in the lower genital tract
- Discuss the neoplastic disease burden of HPV in the United States and worldwide
- Compare the cancer risk of HPV 16 and 18 versus risk from other HPV types
- Evaluate the safety and efficacy of the HPV vaccine
TARGET AUDIENCE includes clinicians (NP, CNM, RN, PA, MD) and other clinic staff providing reproductive healthcare to women.
CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION CREDIT for this self-study activity s available to eligible applicants through February, 2010 for a $10 application fee. MPRES has designated this program for 2.3 contact hours. Interested participants may apply and pay online or by mail. Persons who received CNE credit for participating in the webcast version of this program offered in February2008 are not eligible for CNE through this self-study DVD program.
