Creating or Enhancing Orientation to Family Planning
Michigan Department of Community Health
Detroit Area
May 19-20, 2008
PROGRAM PURPOSE: To provide participants with strategies and resources to enhance their agency’s approach to staff orientation to family planning services.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This 2-day long course will familiarize participants with educational materials specific to the services provided by Title X family planning clinics and the variety of ways they may be incorporated into an overall plan for new staff orientation. The California Health Council’s Family Planning Health Worker curriculum has been chosen by MPRES as an exemplary program, and one copy of the Fundamentals of Family Planning: Self-Study Manual will be provided to each participant as a clinic resource. This curriculum offers the flexibility of use as a self-study by individuals or delivery by a trainer to groups. The presenter will model training strategies for many of the chapters, and all attendees are expected to actively participate in the discussion and role play sessions in order to experience the curriculum from the ‘trainee’s’ viewpoint. Participants will then begin to formulate a plan for enhancing staff orientation in their particular agency or clinic. Emphasis will be placed on the many benefits of creating a ‘learning environment’ in every workplace.
The Fundamentals of Family Planning: Self-Study Manual will be mailed to all participants in early May so that they may become familiar with the materials prior to the workshop. MPRES will be in contact with each participant at scheduled intervals after the program in order to conduct outcome evaluation of the impact of the training on agency orientation and training.
PRESENTER: Charles (Chuck) F. Marquardt is the Lead Program Trainer with the California Family Health Council, Inc. in Los Angeles, California. An experienced educator focusing on effective adult learning techniques, Chuck’s workshops are experiential and interactive. His main topics of instruction include counseling and education in family planning clinics, as well as working with adults to communicate better with youth.
Chuck is on the Board of the Washington, DC-based Healthy Teen Network, is co-author of “Fundamentals of Family Planning: A Self-Study Manual,” and presents regularly at conferences throughout the country.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Clinicians, nurses, community educators, trainers, clinic assistants – any staff person with an interest in and the authority to impact the orientation and training of clinic staff. All persons attending must be active participants – there is no option for auditing the course. MDCH will extend invitations to appropriate personnel and forward final registration information to MPRES by April 30, 2008.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT: 12.0 contact hours of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) credit are available through MPRES (no charge). Up to 12 Continuing Health Education Specialist (CHES) credits are available through the California Family Health Council ($15 application fee per applicant).
